THE winter is an endearing season for all. It brings a refreshing change from sweltering heat of summer. Number of power cuts reduces and water crisis remains under control. Winter works like a spell of fresh air in an otherwise scenario of steaming heat during most part of the year. Fresh winter vegetables are aplenty in the market and we can enjoy a change of taste in our daily menu. In the Dhaka city, although the bite of winter is less than the rural areas, it is a season of festivity when picnics and parties are arranged and most importantly, majority of weddings take place in this season. It is the best time also to visit friends and socialise. Schools are closed after the annual exams and the children and their parents can enjoy a relatively relaxed time. Even the expatriate Bangladeshis, who live in the USA, UK and Canada, prefer to pay visit to home Bangladesh during the winter as the weather is more comfortable here and they also get long holidays during Charismas. In rural Bangladesh there are different sorts of festivities during winter. Various kinds of fairs take place and people enjoy home-made cakes during the time. Trade fairs taking place in many parts of the country for a month in the winter which is an added attraction. Winter can only be compared to a tiny atoll in a vast ocean.
